Electric shift motor – replacement

Note: New Venture motors: New shift motors are packaged with the shift motor positioned in the 2WD/AWD mode. The transfer case must be selected for 2WD/AWD before the shift motor can be installed.

Note: Borg Warner motors: Mode sensors can’t be separated from the shift motors. They are an integral part of the sensor.

1. Disconnect the cable (s) from the negative battery terminal(s) (see Engine electrical systems).

2. Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands.

3. Disconnect the shift motor and the mode sensor connectors.

4. Remove the shift motor and mode sensor assembly mounting bolts and separate the unit from the transfer case.

5. Installation is the reverse of removal.
Replace the shift sector 0-ring with a new part. If the sector shaft does not align with the shift motor, manually shift the transfer case to the correct position.

6. Tighten the electric shift motor mounting bolts to the torque listed in this Chapter’s Specifications.
