Transfer case

The transfer case is a device which transmits power from the transmission to the front and rear driveshafts. The models cov­ered by this manual may be equipped with any one of the following transfer cases, all of them manufactured by New Venture (NV) and Borg Warner (BW):

a) The NV 243, 246, 271 and 273 transfer cases

b) The BW 44-44, 44-45, 44-46 and 44-47 transfer cases

We don’t recommend trying to rebuild any of these transfer cases at home. They’re difficult to overhaul without special tools, and rebuilt units may even be available (on an exchange basis) for less than it would cost to rebuild your own. However, there are a num­ber of components that you can check, adjust and/or replace, and those items are covered in this Chapter.
