Steering gear boots – replacement
Note: This procedure applies to models with independent front suspension only.
1. Loosen the wheel lug nuts, raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Remove the wheel.
2. Remove the tie-rod end and jam nut (Steering linkage – removal and installation).
3. Remove the steering gear boot clamps (see illustration) and slide the boot off. Note: Check for the presence of power steering fluid in the boot. If there is a substantial amount, it means the rack seals are leaking and the power steering gear should be replaced with a new or rebuilt unit.
19.3 The steering gear boots are secured by these clamps
4. Before installing the new boot, wrap the threads and serrations on the end of the steering rod with a layer of tape so the small end of the new boot isn’t damaged.
5. Slide the new boot into position on the steering gear until it seats in the grooves, then install new clamps.
6. Remove the tape and install the tie-rod end (Steering linkage – removal and installation).
7. Install the wheel and lug nuts. Lower the vehicle and tighten the lug nuts to the torque listed in the Tune-up and routine maintenance Specifications.
8. Have the front end alignment checked and, if necessary, adjusted.
