Power steering pump – removal and installation

1. Disconnect the cable (s) from the negative battery terminal(s) (see Engine electrical systems).

2. Remove the drivebelt (see Tune-up and routine maintenance).

3. Using a large syringe or suction gun, suck as much fluid out of the power steering fluid reservoir. Position a drain pan under the power steering pump, then disconnect the hoses from the pump (see illustration). Plug the hoses to prevent excessive fluid loss and the entry of contaminants. Caution: Use a back-up wrench on the fitting into which the high-pressure hose attaches. If this fitting becomes loose, tighten it to 50 ft-lbs. If the fitting is allowed to come all the way out, the pump will have to be replaced with a new one, as the internal components won’t be able to be installed correctly.

4. Remove any interfering engine components.

5. Remove the pump mounting bolts. The bolts can be accessed through the holes in the power steering pump pulley.

6. Lift the pump from the engine compartment, being careful not to let any power steering fluid drip on the vehicle’s paint.

7. Installation is the reverse of removal.
Tighten all fasteners securely. Fill the power steering reservoir with the recommended fluid (see Tune-up and routine maintenance), then bleed the system (Power steering system – bleeding). Re-check the power steering fluid level.
