Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)/gasoline fuel system – general information
Warning: CNG is very flammable and is stored under very high pressure at all times. Take extra precautions when working around any part of the CNG system. Do not try to service any parts of the system as the fuel line is under high pressure and must be purged by a CNG specialist.
The Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) system is used in conjunction with gasoline. The engine always starts and runs on CNG and when the engine coolant temperature it at or above 18° C (64.4° F). The engine operates on gasoline when the ambient temperature is below 18° C (64.4° F). The engine will switch back to gasoline when the CNG system falls below the low-fuel threshold in the system.
To ensure that the gasoline does not get stale, the PCM is programmed to ensure that one tank of gasoline is consumed every 8000 miles.
The CNG is contained in two cylindrical tanks in the storage compartment in the pickup bed. Various valves, pressure regulators and fuel lines are within this storage compartment and they are not to be serviced by other than a CNG specialist.
