Alternator – removal and installation

1. Disconnect the cable (s) from the negative battery terminal(s).

2. Remove the drivebelt (see Tune-up and routine maintenance).

3.6L V6, 3.7L V6 and 4.7L V8 engines

3. Disconnect the battery cable from the B+ output terminal and disconnect the field wire electrical connector from the field terminal (see illustration).

10.3 Remove the nut from the battery output terminal stud (A) and disconnect the battery cable, then disconnect the electrical connector for the field terminal from the rear of the alternator – the mounting bolts are shown at (B) (4.7L V8 engine shown, 3.7L V6 engine similar)

4. Remove the mounting bolts and remove the alternator.

5. If you are replacing the alternator, take the old one with you when purchasing a replacement unit. Make sure the new/rebuilt unit looks identical to the old alternator. Look at the terminals – they should be the same in number, size and location as the terminals on the old alternator. Finally, look at the identification numbers – they will be stamped into the housing or printed on a tag attached to the housing. Make sure the numbers are the same on both alternators.

6. Many new and remanufactured alternators do not have a pulley installed, so you may have to switch the pulley from the old unit to the new/rebuilt one. When buying an alternator, find out the shop’s policy regarding pulleys; some shops will perform this service free of charge.

7. Installation is the reverse of removal.

8. Disconnect the field wire electrical connector from the field terminal (see illustration).

10.8 Disconnect the field wire electrical connector (1) from the field terminal, then depress the two release tabs (2) on the plastic insulator cap, pull off the cap and remove the nut that secures the battery cable to the B+ terminal (Hemi engine)

9. Unsnap the plastic insulator cap from the B+ output terminal, remove the battery cable retaining nut from the B+ output terminal and disconnect the battery cable from the B+ output terminal.

10. Remove the alternator support bracket nuts and bolts and remove the alternator support bracket.

11. Remove the alternator mounting bolts and remove the alternator.

13. Remove the upper alternator bracket mounting bolt.

14. Remove the lower alternator mounting bolt and nut and remove the alternator.

15. Unsnap the plastic insulator cap from the B+ output terminal, remove the nut that secures the battery cable to the B+ output terminal and disconnect the cable from the B+ terminal. Disconnect the field wire electrical connector from the field terminal.
