Rear main oil seal – replacement

1. Rear seal removal and installation for the diesel engine is similar to that of the gasoline engines (see 3.7L V6 and 4.7L V8 engines).

2. Remove the transmission (see Chapters Manual transmission ; Automatic transmission ; Transfer case ) and the clutch (see Clutch and driveline) if working with a manual transmission. Refer to Chapter 3.7L V6 and 4.7L V8 engines and mark the position of the flywheel or driveplate, then remove it and any adapter plate (see illustration).

3. Carefully drill a few holes through the seal, avoiding contact with the crankshaft (see illustration).

4. Install sheet metal or wood screws into the holes and use a slide hammer, pry bar or a claw hammer to pull the seal out.

5. Thoroughly clean the seal bore and the crankshaft and wipe off all traces of oil. Cau tion: DO NOT use oil on the seal lip or crankshaft during installation – the crankshaft sealing surface and the oil seal must be clean and dry of oil or leaks may result. Soapy water can be used as an assembly lubricant if necessary.

6. If the crankshaft is worn at the seal contact area, install a crankshaft sleeve over it.

7. Install the new seal along with the installation pilot tool (included with the seal) onto the crankshaft, then remove the pilot.

8. Use a seal installation tool, a large socket or a steel plate and a hammer to drive the seal into place. Drive it in evenly and don’t allow it to tilt.

9. The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal.
