Parking brake – adjustment
1. Raise the rear of the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Block the front wheels to prevent the vehicle from rolling.
2. Adjust the parking brake shoes (Parking brake shoes – replacement). Loosen the adjusting nut at the equalizer enough to create slack in the cables (see illustration).
12.2 Parking brakecable adjustment details:
1. Adjuster nut
2. Tensioner
3. Tensioner rod
4. 1/4 inch mark
3. Verify that the drums rotate freely without4 1/4 inch mark drag, then fully apply the parking brake.
4. Mark the tensioner rod about 1/4-inch from the tensioner.
5. Tighten the adjusting nut at the tensioner bracket until the mark on the tensioner rod moves into alignment with the tensioner. Cau tion: Do NOT loosen or tighten the tensioner adjusting nut after completing this adjustment.
6. Release the parking brake pedal and verify that the rear wheels rotate freely without any drag.
7. Remove the jackstands and lower the vehicle.
8. Test the operation of the parking brake on an incline (be sure to remain in the vehicle for this check).
