Hydraulic brake booster (diesel engine models) – removal and installation
Warning: The accumulator portion of the booster contains high-pressure gas. Do not carry the booster by the accumulator or drop the unit on the accumulator.
Note: If the brake booster is being replaced due to power steering fluid contamination, flush the power steering system prior to installing the new brake booster (see Suspension and steering systems).
1. Disconnect the cable (s) from the negative battery terminal(s) (see Engine electrical systems).
2. With the engine off, depress the brake pedal several times to discharge the accumulator.
12.2 Parking brake cable adjustment details:
1. Adjuster nut
2. Tensioner
3. Tensioner rod
4. 1/4 inch mark
3. Remove the master cylinder (Master cylinder – removal and installation).
4. Remove the return hose and pressure line (s) from the brake booster.
5. Working inside the vehicle, remove the clip and washer, then disengage the brake booster pushrod from the brake pedal (see illustration 7.9). Remove the brake booster mounting nuts (see illustration 7.10).
6. Working inside the engine compartment, remove the brake booster from the firewall.
7. Installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten the booster mounting nuts and the pressure lines to the torque listed in this Chapter’s Specifications.
8. Bleed the brake hydraulic system (Brake hydraulic system – bleeding), then bleed the power steering system (see Suspension and steering systems).
