Console – removal and installation
Warning: The models covered by this manual are equipped with Supplemental Restraint Systems (SRS), more commonly known as airbags. Always disable the airbag system before working in the vicinity of any airbag system component to avoid the possibility of accidental deployment of the airbags, which could cause personal injury (see Chassis electrical system).
All except 65RFE 6-speed models.
1. Use a plastic trim tool or a screwdriver wrapped with tape to pry the covers from the sides of the console.
2. Pry up and remove the shifter trim ring and the cover. Remove the shifter bezel.
3. Detach the shift cable from the shift lever and the console.
4. Remove the console mounting screws and lift the console.
5. Disconnect all wiring harnesses, then remove the console.
6. Installation is the reverse of removal.
65RFE 6-speed models
7. Use a plastic trim tool or a screwdriver wrapped with tape to pry the trim ring from the sides of the console bezel. Remove the bezel.
8. Remove the rubber insert from the console bezel.
9. Remove the two front mounting screws from the bezel.
10. Using a plastic trim tool or a screwdriver wrapped with tape to pry the console bezel, lift up and remove the console bezel.
11. Remove the center storage tray’s rubber liner, remove the fasteners and remove the storage tray.
12. Installation is the reverse of removal.
