Rear main oil seal – replacement
1. Remove the oil pans (Oil pans – removal and installation).
2. Remove the driveplate (Driveplate – removal and installation).
3. Unbolt the seal retainer from the engine block and slide the retainer and seal off the end of the crankshaft.
Note: The rear main oil seal has been incorporated into the seal retainer and must be replaced as a unit.
4. Clean the engine block, oil pan and crankshaft.
5. The new seal and retainer assembly comes with a plastic installation sleeve; make sure it’s in place.
6. Apply a 1/4-inch bead of RTV sealant where the lower corners of the seal retainer meet the oil pan.
7. Place the assembly over the crankshaft and push it squarely into place, making sure the dowels in the seal retainer engage the locating holes in the engine block.
8. Install, but don’t fully tighten, the seal retainer bolts.
9. Remove the plastic installation sleeve, then tighten the bolts, using an alternating pattern, to the torque listed in this Chapter’s Specifications.
10. The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal.
