Power steering fluid replacement
(every 90,000 miles or 72 months)
1. Apply the parking brake, raise the front of the vehicle and support it securely with jackstands.
2. Position a drain pan under the power steering pump, then disconnect the return line (s) from the pump (see Suspension and steering systems). Plug the return line port(s) to prevent excessive fluid loss and the entry of contaminants.
3. Position the return line (s) so the fluid can drain into the pan.
4. Start the engine and allow it to run at idle. Turn the wheels from side-to-side, without hitting the stops, while an assistant fills the reservoir with new fluid.
5. Run about a quart of new fluid through the system, then stop the engine and install the line (s).
6. Fill the reservoir (Fluid level checks), then bleed the system (see Suspension and steering systems).
7. Repeat Steps 2 through 6, making sure all contaminated fluid is removed from the system.
8. Fill the power steering reservoir with the recommended fluid and bleed the system (see Suspension and steering systems).
