Exhaust manifolds – removal and installation
Removal
Warning: Allow the engine to cool completely before performing this procedure.
1. Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery (see Engine electrical systems). Remove the engine cover.
2. If you’re removing the right-side manifold, remove the air filter housing.
3. Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Disconnect the exhaust pipeto-manifold connections. It’s a good idea to apply penetrating oil on the studs/bolts and let it soak in for about 10 minutes before attempting to remove them. Note: It may be easier to disconnect the oxygen sensors and remove the front exhaust pipes completely.
4. Attach an engine support fixture or an engine hoist to the engine lift points with a chain.
5. Remove the engine mount through-bolts, then raise the engine enough to get access to the exhaust manifold bolts.
6. Lower the vehicle and remove the heat shield nuts and the heat shield (see illustration).

7. Remove the bolts retaining the exhaust manifold to the cylinder head starting with the center ones and working toward the outer bolts (see illustrations).
Caution: Organize the bolts so they can be installed in their original positions. Some of the bolts are stainless steel alloy and should only be in certain locations.

8. Remove the exhaust manifold and the gasket.
Installation
9. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. Clean the manifold and head gasket surfaces and check for cracks and flatness. Replace the exhaust manifold gaskets.
10. Install the exhaust manifold (s) and fasteners. Tighten the bolts/nuts to the torque listed in this Chapter’s Specifications. Start with the center bolts and proceed to the outer ones. Approach the final torque in three steps. Install the heat shields.
11. Apply anti-seize compound to the exhaust manifold-to-exhaust pipe bolts and tighten them securely.
