Powertrain Control Module (PCM) – removal and installation
Caution: Avoid static electricity damage to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) by grounding yourself to the body of the vehicle before touching the PCM, and using a special antistatic pad on which to store the PCM once it’s removed.
Note: Any time the PCM is replaced with a new unit, it must be reprogrammed with a scan tool by a dealership service department or other qualified repair shop.
Note: Any time the battery is disconnected, stored operating parameters may be lost from the PCM, causing the engine to run rough for a period of time while the PCM relearns the information.
Gasoline engines
1. The PCM is located in the right rear corner of the engine compartment on the firewall.
2. Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery (see Engine electrical systems).
3. Carefully disconnect the large PCM electrical connectors (see illustration).
12.3 To disconnect each of the electrical connectors from the Powertrain Control Module (PCM), release the orange lock, then depress the release tab and pull off the connector
4. Remove the PCM mounting bolts and remove the PCM.
5. Installation is the reverse of removal.
Diesel engine
6. Disconnect the cables from the negative battery terminals (see Engine electrical systems). Note: Wait 10 minutes (automatic transmission vehicles) or 75 seconds (manual transmission vehicles) after turning the key Off before disconnecting the battery. Failure to wait for the PCM to fully power down may result in a diagnostic trouble code (DTC).
7. The PCM is located on the left side of the
engine block. For access, raise the front of the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands.
8. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the PCM (see illustration).
12.8 Disconnect the PCM electrical connectors and remove the mounting bolts (some models use three mounting bolts, while others use five) (diesel engine)
9. Remove the mounting bolts and remove the PCM from the engine.
10. Installation is the reverse of removal.
