Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor – replacement

1. Disconnect the cable (s) from the negative battery terminal(s) (see Engine electrical systems).

3.6L V6 engine

Note: There are two CMP sensors, located at the rear of the valve covers and are bolted through to the cylinder head.

2. Remove the engine cover, if equipped.

3. Disconnect the electrical connector from the sensor (s), then remove the sensor(s) mounting bolt.

4. Remove the sensor (s) from the valve cover. Inspect the 0-ring; if it is not damaged it can be used again.

5. Installation is the reverse of removal.

Tighten the sensor mounting bolt (s) to the torque listed in this Chapter’s Specifications

3.7L V6 and 4.7L V8 engines

Note: The CMP sensor is located on the top of the front end of the right cylinder head.

6. Raise the front end of the vehicle and place it securely on jackstands.

7. Disconnect the electrical connector from the CMP sensor (see illustrations).

4.7a Disconnect the CMP sensor (A) electrical connector (B) and remove the sensor mounting bolt (C) (as seen from underneath the engine) (3.7L V6 engine)

RAM Trucks Disconnect the CMP sensor (A) electrical connector (B) and remove the sensor mounting bolt (C) (as seen from underneath the engine) (3.7L V6 engine)

4.7b Disconnect the CMP sensor (A) electrical connector (B) and remove the sensor mounting bolt (C) (as seen from underneath the engine) (4.7L V8 engine)

RAM Trucks Disconnect the CMP sensor (A) electrical connector (B) and remove the sensor mounting bolt (C) (as seen from underneath the engine) (4.7L V8 engine)

8. Remove the sensor mounting bolt and remove the CMP sensor.

9. Inspect the CMP sensor 0-ring for cracks, tears and other deterioration. If it’s damaged, replace it.

10. When installing the CMP sensor, apply a small dab of clean engine oil to the sensor 0-ring, then use a slight rocking motion to work the 0-ring into the sensor mounting bore. Do NOT use a twisting motion or you will damage the 0-ring.

11. Make sure that the CMP sensor mounting flange is fully seated flat against the mounting surface around the sensor mounting hole. Caution: If the CMP sensor is not fully seated against its mounting surface, the sensor mounting tang will be damaged when the sensor mounting bolt is tightened to the specified torque.

12. Installation is otherwise the reverse of removal. Tighten the CMP sensor mounting bolt to the torque listed in this Chapter’s Specifications.

Hemi engines

Note: The CMP sensor is located on the upper right side of the timing chain cover, under the alternator.

13. Disconnect the electrical connector from the CMP sensor (see illustration).

4.13 Disconnect the CMP sensor electrical connector and remove the sensor mounting bolt (Hemi engine)

14. Remove the CMP sensor mounting bolt and remove the CMP sensor from the timing chain cover.

15. Remove the old CMP sensor 0-ring (see illustration) and inspect it for cracks, tears and deterioration. If the old 0-ring is damaged, replace it.

4.15 Remove the old CMP sensor 0-ring and inspect it for cracks, tears and deterioration. If it’s damaged, replace it

RAM Trucks Remove the old CMP sensor 0-ring and inspect it for cracks, tears and deterioration. If it's damaged, replace it

16. When installing the CMP sensor, apply a small dab of clean engine oil to the sensor 0-ring, then use a slight rocking motion to work the 0-ring into the sensor mounting bore. Do NOT use a twisting motion or you will damage the 0-ring.

18. Installation is otherwise the reverse of removal. Tighten the CMP sensor mounting bolt to the torque listed in this Chapter’s Specifications.

Diesel engine

Note: The CMP sensor is located on the left rear of the timing gear cover, below the injection pump.

19. Disconnect the electrical connector from the CMP sensor (see illustration). Note: The CMP sensor is very difficult to reach. You might want to unbolt the power steering pump mounting bracket for better access.

4.19 Disconnect the CMP sensor electrical connector, remove the sensor mounting bolt and pull the sensor out of the timing cover (diesel engines)

RAM Trucks Disconnect the CMP sensor electrical connector, remove the sensor mounting bolt and pull the sensor out of the timing cover (diesel engines)

20. Remove the CMP sensor mounting bolt and remove the CMP sensor from its mounting hole.

21. Remove the CMP sensor 0-ring and inspect it for cracks, tears and deterioration. If it’s damaged, replace it.

22. Clean out the CMP sensor mounting hole.

23. Apply a small dab of clean engine oil on the CMP sensor 0-ring, then install the sensor using a slight rocking (side-to-side) motion. Do NOT twist the sensor into position or you will damage the 0-ring.

24. The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal.
