Oil cooler – removal and installation

Warning: Wait until the engine is completely cool before beginning this procedure.

Removal

1. Relieve the fuel system pressure, then disconnect the cable from the negative termi­nal of the battery (see Engine electrical systems).

2. Drain the coolant (see Tune-up and routine maintenance).

3. Remove the lower intake manifold (Intake manifolds – removal and installation).

4. Remove the oil cooler mounting fasteners (see illustration).

5. Remove the oil cooler and discard the seals.

Installation

6. Install new 0-ring seals to the oil cooler.

Caution: Do not lubricate the 0-ring seals —install them dry.

7. Place the oil cooler onto the block and install the two mounting screws.

8. Install the mounting bolts and tighten the screws and bolts to the torque listed in this Chapter’s Specifications.

9. The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal.

10. Change the engine oil and filter and refill the cooling system (see Tune-up and routine maintenance). Run the engine until normal operating temperature is reached, and check for leaks.
